2007 EASTERN MISSOURI DODGEBALL ASSOCIATION
Week 6

Note: The following information does not purposefully explain the records of all teams from week 6--it just provides the important data about how the final seeds finished up.

The Big Four: In the boys division, there has been 4 great teams the whole season and they all finished first through fourth. It turns out that Dream Team and the Stingrays completed a solid Week 6 with a perfect 5-0 record. In the NL East, it looked as if the 636 Boys would take the championship after dropping the Zumwalt Bad Boys, but then lost it to the Broncos.

Spot #8: The Dudleys and Captain Planets thought they were in and they got in. Congrats. But Sparta, the Mean Machines, and the Broncos were vying for the last 2 spots--and many thought that the Broncos would be dismissed because they lose all tie breakers and had to go 4-1 to win 20 games. Well, the Broncos did it, including an upset win over the 636 Boys. Well, the pressure then fell onto the Mean Machines who needed to go 4-1 to keep up with the Broncos. With losses to the Planets, Stingrays, and Not to Mess With (all 2-1 games), it appeared the Machines were done. But then out of nowhere during the 8:45 games, the Hitmen (who entered 13-10) won their first 3 games including a win over Sparta. What did that mean? It meant that the Machines were 18-10, Hitmen were 16-10, and Sparta was 17-9 (thus giving a chance of a three way tie of all three teams at 18-10. To make matters even more interesting, the Hitmen had beaten Sparta twice and the Machines had beaten the Hitmen twice. This meant that at around 9:21pm, the Machines still had a chance at the playoffs! Then Sparta won twice, the Hitmen lost twice, and the fat lady sung for the Machines.

Co-Ed Stars: The E-Town Rangers went 4-1 with a split squad to finish off their 24 win regular season. Not to Mess With went 5-0 with their full team to finally upend the Cuts and finish in first in the AL Central (including a 2-0 win over the Cuts). But the AL West finally was one of the most exciting moments of the night when Vendetta's Jarod Dattilo almost fought off 4 people before succumbing to the Ivans who took the crown (both teams were tied 17-10 after 27 games played).

13-15 Anyone? Don't look now, but there were 5 Co-ed teams that finished with 13-15 records, but only 4 playoff spots. Ouch. First, who gained? Sweet Feet gained the most (they went an amazing 5-0 in the finale), the most improved out of all the teams. The Wildcats also went 3-2 behind the strong arms and amazing abilities of the "Wonder Twins" Roland and Joey Watson. The Emo Kidz went 2-3 while the Saints went 1-4. So here is how they got lined up. First, the Saints had the toughest schedule, thus giving them the automatic #6 seed. For the Kidz, Wildcats, and Sweet Feet, since they had all beaten each other evenly, the breaker had to go the best overall divisional record (which was easy to figure cause divisional games were played in weeks 2 and 6. In those ten games played, Sweet Feet went 7-3, Emo went 6-4, and the Wildcats went 4-6. Thus Sweet Feet gets #7, Emo gets #8, and the Wildcats found themselves with the top seed in the consolation bracket.

Woman Troubles? The women's division got turned upside down this last Thursday. Heading in, the Vixens were first, followed by Emo and Sweet Feet. Now, Sweet Feet is first followed by Emo and the Vixens. It just so happened that members of the Vixens were ill (no kidding, very very ill) and some of the others had the wrong time. Though they appeared to be solid and had wrapped up a spot in the Co-Ed tournament, their 0-5 compared with the 5-0 Sweet Feet allowed a 4 game switch to take place and send the Vixens to 3rd place in the girls division, 5th place in the AL East, and into the co-ed consolation bracket. Technically, the Vixens are still one of the favorites to win the girls division because they have the most consistent 6 women who show up to play, and they are also one of the favorites to win the Co-Ed Consolation tournaended up stinky for them because of situations out of their control.

Ranking Explanation: A lot of teams ended up with the same record and had to go to either head to head competition or schedule difficulty for tie-breaking procedures. But if it didn't matter (for example, if two teams tied at #2 or #3, since they play each other in the same pool), I just put one in front of the other using my memory as best as I could. If something has to be switched for some reason on Thursday or Friday because I have the head to head reversed let me know. So here was my thinking specifically in each situation (and I understand it is not exact but any switch would have zero consequences on divisional pooling. Dream Team got #2 over ZBB because of schedule difficulty. The Dudleys got #6 over the Broncos because of schedule difficulty. The Wild Dogs got #12 over the Magnums because their winning percentage was greater despite both teams being exactly under .500 by two games. Not to Mess With got the #2 over the Crazy Ivans because N2MW had beaten the Ivans earlier in the year. Vendetta got the #4 over the Cuts because of schedule difficulty. Co-ed Places 6-9 are explained above in the Section titled 13-15 Anyone? The Hillbillies got the #10 over the Vixens because of schedule difficulty (oh yeah, by the way, they look great and should not be underestimated in the Co-Ed Consolation tournament). Dodge This! got the #12 spot because of their wins over the Roaring Jackalopes. The Bearded Unicorns got the #15 spot over Boon Dox because of schedule difficulty. And finally, Arson (and any team from here on out that is either kicked out of the league or forfeits their season) received the #16 seed because they are no longer a team. For those that truly understand scheduling, you will have to agree that being this specific in limited time after scheduling a 32 team 28 game season league is at the very least pretty amazing (not to toot anyone's horn or anything). There does exist the chance (and a pretty good chance really) that a team tied with another actually beat the other during the course of the season and I have it flipped, if so, give me a holler at tompapez@hotmail.com.
